Kaleidoscope of a Millennial
Millennials are the generation of people born from 1981 -1996.The generation that saw the rise of the internet, mobile phones and other gadgets.
The liberalization kids-We were born into an era of the rise of technology, which meant we were the first to use computers and the internet. We also had our video games, colour tv's,video cassettes to watch our favorite cartoons, reality shows and movies.
The world had started to become globalized, with easier communication, use of cordless phones, faxes, local phone booths and then after internet, the video calls on skype etc.Mobile phones were mainly used by the working professionals initially.
Our other favorite pastime as young children were our role play sets like kitchen set, doctor set, playing with dolls, for boys toy cars, different types of water guns, toy pistols etc.As teenagers we had the privilege of using the internet on our desktops at home, websites like yahoo, orkut and all were some main websites before Facebook.
By the time we started our college ,we had the small Nokia mobiles to call and send SMS.
It was in Our generation that girls started doing further studies and taking up jobs in all fields. In muslim malabar areas mostly girls would be married in their early twenties and by around 25 would have borne children too.
Young girls were expected to be educated and start a family too, unlike now, where girls would prefer to be married only once they find jobs and settle in life.
Yes,we became spouses of either the Gen X,millenials and parents of the Gen Z,Gen Alpha and Beta.
As we grew,so did technology, from bulky tv s to Smart ones, desktops to laptops, tablets and smart phones.Shopping in malls and supermarkets to online shopping,Handwritten letters to e-mails and whatsapp messages.
As parents most of us like to have a friendly relationship with our children rather than the previous authoritarian disciplinary methods.Usage of social media has had it's pros and cons,as we struggle to limit our kid's screen time, find it difficult to engage them. There is also the stress of balancing work, studies, family life etc.
We have reached a stage where we have decided to take most decisions on our own and rather live life the way we want.
A cup of coffee/tea/hot chocolate,a get-together with family/friends are simple things that keep us happy.
